The Founding Directors, Nick and Mike, have built Iona's team to ensure the requisite project and waste industry management, technical quality control and investment assessment skills can be applied to selected investment opportunities in the bio-energy from waste sector. The strong industry knowledge within the team is augmented through partnerships embracing key Multi National Corporation and Small to Medium Enterprise players and the broader advisor community within the UK and European Anaerobic Digestion and Biomass sectors.
Michael has over 20 years' experience within waste management and infra-structure investment. Read More +He has worked for both the public and private sector and held board positions for the last 15 years of his career including chairman of ELWA Ltd, which operates the largest MBT facility within the UK and has previously held senior roles within Shanks and Veolia Group. In addition to his roles and responsibilities as a Director of Iona where Michael sits on the Investment Committee and the Group Boards, he is a non-executive Director of London Waste Limited and a voting member of the Investment Committee of the London Waste and Recycling Board which is a funded from central government and the London Development Agency to invest in projects that promote waste reduction and recycling in London. Michael is a MCIWM and has a Master in Finance degree from the London Business School.
John is the independent Chairman of the investment committee established by the Company to oversee all investment decisions. Read More +John is a qualified FCA and served as Financial Director and Deputy Chief Executive of Veolia Environmental Services (previously Onyx Environmental Group) since its establishment in the UK in 1990.
Nick joined Electra Partners in 1993 after several years in investment analysis and fund management. Read More +Nick started his career as an investment analyst at Montagu Loebl Stanley Stockbrokers in 1985 before moving into fund management at Provident Mutual and latterly Electra Partners, where he worked from 1993 to 2008. Whilst at Electra he was part of the team investing in smaller company transactions and was also responsible for fund raising over £125m for smaller company investments. Nick founded Iona Capital with Mike Dunn in 2010 and sits on the Company’s investment and management committees. Nick is an economics graduate of Nottingham University and holds associate examinations from the Institute of Investment Management and Research.
Richard is a consultant to Iona and also sits on its Investment Committee. He brings over 20 years experience in the clean tech sector, investment banking and strategic consulting. Read More +Richard was most recently the CEO of Biogen, the UK’s leading food waste AD builder and operator. Prior to Biogen, Richard was the CEO of RecovCo, a specialist aluminium recycler that acquired and operated Alcan’s French recycling business. He has also founded and raised funding for a number of other entrepreneurial businesses. Earlier in his career, he was Head of Strategy for ANZ Investment Bank in Australia, focused on the Australasia and the Emerging Markets. He has also been a strategy consultant on a range of international projects for MMG and AT Kearnery after lecturing in Economics at University College Cork in Ireland. Richard has an MEng in Engineering Economics and Management from Oxford University.
Mark brings 30 years experience from a career in Merchant Banking including financing, investing, advising and funding raising. He currently acts as a Non-Executive Director and/or Management Consultant to private companies with a focus on strategy, change, finance, risk and governance. Prior to that Mark spent 12 years with Robert Fleming building an international business financing, and advising both corporates & private equity funds on acquisitions, restructuring and disposals and completed a number of principal and PE investments for Flemings. In 1999 he went to Hong Kong as CEO designate of Jardine Fleming Bank and NED at Jardine Pacific Finance eventually playing a leading role in the sale of the Bank in 2001. Mark has a degree Banking & Finance (Loughborough ‘83) an MBA (CASS ’89) and an Advanced Professional Diploma in Non-Executive Directorship (2013). He has been a member of The Chartered Institute of Bankers since 1984.
Phil has over fifteen years of experience in the in the waste management industry working for local authorities, the private sector and as a consultant assisting both public and private clients on matters of waste management, contract establishment and contract management. Read More +His most recent role is the Managing Director of Kinetic Consultancy Solutions. Phil’s previous roles include Project Director for two major waste management investment contracts namely; the Integrated waste collection and disposal contract for the London Borough of Southwark and the waste treatment contract for Cumbria County Council. Phil also works for Defra advising local authorities on commercial issues relating to waste infrastructure PFI including advising on funder issues relating to infrastructure development. Other recent project highlights include on-going project director role for the procurement of waste infrastructure to manage approximately 1million tonnes of municipal waste for the North London Waste Authority, and tender preparation for private sector organisations.
Paul brings 38 years of experience in all phases of major projects in international Oil & Gas, LNG, Petrochemical and Renewable Energy sectors. David Eades, a qualified Accountant who is a very experienced executive who has led businesses from start-up through to IPO. Stuart has more than 12 years experience in the waste management and renewable energy sectors, working as an engineering consultant, developer and investment manager. Read More +His background is in the specification and development of biological treatment projects. Prior to joining Iona, Stuart was Business Development Manager and a Senior Consultant at Fichtner Consulting Engineers, where he was responsible for leading the development of Fichtner’s AD team and delivery of the majority of Fichtner’s work in the UK AD sector, including directly advising Iona on the technical aspects of a number of early deals . Stuart has also completed technical assessments of a wide range of renewable energy technologies, ranging from AD facilities designed for the treatment of agricultural feedstocks to clean and waste wood biomass combustion plants. Working as a project developer, he became familiar with UK planning and permitting regulations and has been directly involved in successful planning applications for a number of MBT-AD facility sites. He has also spent time working on waste treatment projects internationally and acted as Lender’s Technical Adviser to a number of large and small PFI/PPP projects featuring MBT and AD technologies, including the North West and North East Wales food waste treatment contracts, the Essex Waste PFI and NLWA residual waste treatment PPP projects. Stuart has a degree in Physics from Manchester University where he also went on to receive a Master of Enterprise in Environmental Science and Business.
Dominic joined Iona Capital in May 2014. He recently qualified as a chartered accountant, having trained at Tudor John LLP. Parviz had deployed a number of projects in Anaerobic Digestion and Recycling. He has a BA & Masters in Management degrees from Essex University. Parviz has also completed an MBA.
Dr Rebecca O’Neill is a Chemical Engineer with over 8 years’ experience in the renewable fuels and waste management industry, working in R&D, industrial project development, engineering consultancy and asset management. Read More +Prior to joining Iona Rebecca was Head of the AD Sector at Fichtner Consulting Engineers, where she was responsible for development of the sector, team management and project delivery. Rebecca has extensive experience in the renewables industry, offering technical support during all stages of project development and operation including due diligence, construction monitoring, process optimisation and troubleshooting across agricultural, MBT AD and food waste AD facilities. Rebecca’s previous experience involved working for an environmental engineering firm, where she was responsible for the development, analysis and evaluation of a number of biological waste treatment technologies. She was involved in the start-up of a farm scale anaerobic digestion plant using a range of analysis techniques to ensure efficient operation of the AD system. Rebecca has a PhD from Queen’s University in Belfast which focussed on the development of renewable fuels from waste, and a Masters’ Degree in Chemical Engineering.
Julia is responsible for providing financial modelling support within Iona Capital. She is experienced in C++, Matlab, VBA and HTML. Julia's first language is Russian, she is fluent in English and can speak German.
Jeremy is a chartered accountant and brings over 20 years of experience of advising infrastructure funds and regulated businesses. Read More +Jeremy was an Executive Director at Ernst & Young LLP for over 8 years where his clients included infrastructure funds, PFI/PPP funds, hedge funds and asset managers. Prior to joining Ernst & Young LLP, Jeremy was a director at Smith & Williamson where he was a member of their financial services & markets group. Jeremy sits on the Company’s investment and management committees and has a degree in Economics from York University.
